ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY
I love the power of images - to evoke stories and stir up the inner landscapes from our own memories and our souls.
My first visit to a darkroom was in my grandfather’s basement when I was 5. There I saw the mystery and magic of faces appearing on paper in black and white, submerged in a bath of chemicals under red light. I was entranced. I saw dreamlike images emerging before my eyes. The magic never disappeared.
Through the years I have occasionally grabbed a camera, shot family photos, printed a few contact sheets and printed a few images to frame; but I stopped short of diving deeply into shooting and exploring, mostly due to the time and the cost. But the allure of capturing unique images - of landscapes architecture, my family life stories, or my travel adventures - never left me.
Digital technology re-awakened my interest and appetite – ‘you can shoot as much as you want!’ And so my volume of captures increased, but still without much printed evidence – other than the mounting shoebox collections of ‘prints’ from the drugstore - to satisfy that craving to capture the once-in-a-moment beauty, in that fraction-of-a-second of life.
Now, finally, I have more time and some better technology at my disposal. My journey has been first of learning to be present in the moment and to see my surroundings with clarity. The attempt to capture and reveal those moments through photography has been at times haphazard, but always generates growth, energy and discovery. So the journey-in-earnest is underway for me.
I continue to learn every day - from the wise and generous mentors around me; from the dive-in-and-make-lots-of-mistakes luxury of digital; from the amazing playroom of Lightroom that allows me to discover imagery within the imagery; and from the rediscovery of another person’s eyes and heart…to see magic and wonder again for the first time.
I am grateful.
